Description
Ayurvedic Approach to Diabetes Management In Ayurveda, diabetes is known as Madhumeha, which literally means "sweet urine." It is considered a type of Prameha, a group of metabolic disorders that affect the urinary system. Diabetes, particularly Type 2 diabetes, is often linked to an imbalance in the Kapha dosha, and over time it may also involve the Pitta and Vata doshas. The Ayurvedic approach to diabetes focuses on balancing the doshas, improving metabolism, detoxification, and lifestyle management to control blood sugar levels and prevent complications. Ayurvedic Perspective on Diabetes (Madhumeha) Diabetes in Ayurveda is seen as a metabolic disorder caused by impaired Agni (digestive fire), leading to the accumulation of Ama (toxins) and the imbalance of the Kapha dosha. The excess Kapha, combined with poor digestion, creates a disturbance in glucose metabolism, leading to high blood sugar levels. Ayurveda classifies diabetes into two types: Sahaja Madhumeha: Congenital or genetic diabetes, similar to Type 1 diabetes, where the body fails to produce enough insulin. Apathyanimittaja Madhumeha: Lifestyle-induced diabetes, akin to Type 2 diabetes, which is associated with obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and poor diet.
